Cinema Saturdays: A Bridge Too Far

I abhor violence and war. It's far too easy to initiate violence and far too difficult to stop it once initiated. I wish we didn't have to talk about it, but humans are violent creatures, so the use of violence will always be in our DNA. One nice thing about lose to it in the past is that there's no doubt of the motivation of the people involved. They want to live, to win. These are organizations dedicated completely to a single purpose. We can look at how well (or not) they did.

A Bridge Too Far is about a colossal screw-up in WWII. It was late in the war. The D-Day landings had occurred, the allies were pushing into Europe, trying to finish the war as quickly as possible. Two major thrusts were being made, one in the north and one in the south. At the top of the army, from 100,000 ft, there was a choice: there wasn't enough supplies for both efforts. Should the allies send more supplies to Patton, busy pushing across France and saying this was the ideal time to press all the way to Berlin. Or should they send supplies to Montgomery? He had a plan to use airborne troops in conjunction with armor to capture nine bridges, effectively cutting the top off of Germany's resistance while opening up critical ports to the fighting.

Churchill was in favor of Montgomery's plan. Patton was sure there was a window of a few days where more resources now would win the war. The political pressure increased on Eisenhower. Eventually, the command staff decided: Montgomery's plan would be the main attack.

Over and over again, evidence surfaced that this was a bad idea, but the momentum from the top had been established. This was the way we were going to go. A Bridge Too Far is the story of Operation Market Garden and the men who did their best to make a bad plan work. It's a lesson to everybody who works in dysfunctional organizations.

I've moved!

Locals is turning off their free accounts and I've decided that I'd rather go back to maintaining my own site than sign up for any more "free" services that end up changing the conditions of service later.

The new site is just like this one, only no "locals" in the name. It's https://danielbmarkham.com

Please give it a shot, and please let me know if you have any problems signing up. I think I have the configuration down but you guys will be the first 100 or so to sign up, so there'll probably be some snags.
