Wandering Wednesdays: Tyler Cowan
I think Tyler Cowan has one of the most intelligent podcasts on the internet.
Cowan is an economics professor at George Mason University. He is one of two people running the blog "Marginal Revolution University" Tyler started the blog ten years ago or more (?) and since then it's grown into a powerhouse online. It's one of the few extremely successful ongoing blogging enterprises.
Why? Well, that's the kind of question Cowan would be interested in. Why does one blog do well and another not? He said during an interview that he had thought briefly about getting rid of the older content but he realized that people liked to come to the site to learn how the authors reasoned about issues involving economics. It's an example of watching really smart people think.
But I'm more of a fan of the podcast. The goal is simple: meet new intelligent, interesting people and find out what makes them tick, what their deep philosophies are. This is not a normal interview podcast. Cowan does a lot of research. He comes out of the gate with in-depth, provocative, and many times unanswerable questions. This tends to throw off a lot of guests. They were expecting the usual fluff interviews.
It's not confrontative either. I get the feeling that Tyler really enjoys just meeting new people and hearing about their ideas, probing to see if they've thought through certain ramifications or if they're just all show and no substance. When he finds a lightweight, he doesn't show it. Almost imperceptibly he backs off and moves to more friendly and populist banter. It's a joy to watch.
I like listen to Cowan's podcast from time-to-time because his goal is the same as mine: learn as much as you can while demonstrating through example how to interact with all sorts of cool folks at a deep yet friendly level. Highly recommended.

I've moved!
Locals is turning off their free accounts and I've decided that I'd rather go back to maintaining my own site than sign up for any more "free" services that end up changing the conditions of service later.
The new site is just like this one, only no "locals" in the name. It's https://danielbmarkham.com
Please give it a shot, and please let me know if you have any problems signing up. I think I have the configuration down but you guys will be the first 100 or so to sign up, so there'll probably be some snags.
