Startup Sundays: Bloomberg ran an interesting piece awhile back about the deaths of small businesses that are currently un-tracked.
Economics has long had the "unseen" problem, that is: people don't think of major economic changes unless they can see them, and what they do see they tend to slant by however the material is presented. Ten thousand donut makers could be laid off over a few weeks around the country and it might not register at all. Or, conversely, ten donut makers may be laid off in a faraway city and a major news outlet decides to do an in-depth series about the impact to their lives, and suddenly it's a major issue. Public discourse tends to focus on what we see and completely ignores everything else.
I hope this piece is overblown and there is not an impending small business tragedy. From my limited experience managing restaurants many decades ago, however, I know for a fact that most restaurants don't have anywhere near the capacity to go dark for weeks at a time. Working at half-capacity might actually be worse for them. At least if you go broke you might be able to move on. If they string you along, you could still go broke and end up having an extremely painful person experience while doing so.
