Toolin' Up Thursdays: wall mounts
A few years back, I went on a buying spree. The goal? Ubiquitous status displays. My idea was to experiment with various signage/display systems around the home and office. This would lead to more experience when recommending them to projects and programs.
Results? It was a mixed bag. I put one in the kitchen and mounted an HP slate computer. The HP, oddly enough, ran Android, which meant that even though it was a 17" monitor, it worked just like a phone. We found this quite useful for playing music, making grocery lists (since it was besides the refrigerator), and checking the weather.
With the others, I had to also mount/connect a computer. For a couple of these, I bought a VESA box (?). It was a box that went between the wall arm and the display. That's where I put a NUC.
On both of these I installed Ubuntu and set them to auto-login. One had a touch-screen, the other did not. Finally I stuck an old tablet computer to the wall of our garden shed and ran power to it.
There were some really cool and really sucky parts. For instance, dangling a mouse and keyboard from the wall is simply a non-starter, no matter how much it seems like it might work. Touchscreens are great if you're using software made to adapt to touchscreens.
All of that's probably a post for another day, but in general, this was a great investment because it made me think of the difference between the _idea_ of a common public system and the actuality of installing one. Fun times.

I've moved!
Locals is turning off their free accounts and I've decided that I'd rather go back to maintaining my own site than sign up for any more "free" services that end up changing the conditions of service later.
The new site is just like this one, only no "locals" in the name. It's https://danielbmarkham.com
Please give it a shot, and please let me know if you have any problems signing up. I think I have the configuration down but you guys will be the first 100 or so to sign up, so there'll probably be some snags.
