The best way to watch "Alien" is if you've never heard of the movie and you're all alone, in the dark, watching it on a huge screen.
Like "BladeRunner", "Alien" evokes a gritty, dirty future where schmucks just like us are doing their best to get by.
You know a movie was a notable cultural force when the studios took the idea and beat the living shit out of it trying to make as much money as possible. Sadly, this is the case with "Alien" The original is still very rewatchable, though, especially for students of horror movies. Some of the scenes, like the room with all of the chains and the hiding cat are remarkable.
Why does a spaceship need a room with a bunch of chains hanging down that drips water all of the time? We in the audience never ask ourselves that, and that, more than anything else, is a tribute to the amazing spell the movie is still able to cast on viewers. One of the best original horror movies ever.
