Book Review: The Principles of Product Development Flow

If the first book today made for a great listen on the way to work or at the gym, this book is definitely not like that.

I found "The Principles of Product Development Flow" to be a bear. I've tried many different ways over the years to organize and optimize the projects I've been on. Eventually, however, I came back to this book. This is _the_ book to understand large-scale production management.

For the record, programming should NEVER be a production job. As knowledge workers, our job is to creatively solve problems, not sit at a workstation on a plant floor nailing widgets. The first kind of job is a value discovery job. The second kind is a value delivery optimization job. They are opposite animals.

But even in the creative fields, there's plenty going on that falls under the "production" rubric. There's processing a stream of interview candidates, there's handling trouble tickets, there's sequencing up conference resources. In fact, the more you look around, especially in a large organization, the more you'll see things moving along through predictable and rote processes where the flow needs to be optimized.

This is also one of the principles of Kanban. If you want to understand Kanban, here's where you start. Make it through this and then pick up a "Dummies" book to see how to apply it. You'll thank me later. For whatever reason, starting the the Five-Minute Video stuff doesn't seem to work with Kanban.

Tough reading, well worth it. Slog it out through this and you'll begin to understand how a lot of things around you work ... and how to make them work better.

I've moved!

Locals is turning off their free accounts and I've decided that I'd rather go back to maintaining my own site than sign up for any more "free" services that end up changing the conditions of service later.

The new site is just like this one, only no "locals" in the name. It's https://danielbmarkham.com

Please give it a shot, and please let me know if you have any problems signing up. I think I have the configuration down but you guys will be the first 100 or so to sign up, so there'll probably be some snags.
