171 years ago today, Edgar Allan Poe died.
Poe was quite a character. The day he died, they were expecting him at a new job he just scored in Philadelphia. He took the job even though his doctor told him not to travel. In his later life, he was in notoriously poor health.
He was confused in the days prior to his death, not being able to locate his luggage and grabbing the wrong sword cane on his way out the door. Who doesn't miss sword canes?
One of the people who hated him most? That was the person who wrote his obituary. It was not a nice obituary, as you might imagine. It described him as a drunken, mad, womanizing opium addict who lived most of the stories he wrote. Only seven people came to his funeral, but at least his cat missed him, dying almost at the same time as he did.
He was buried in an unmarked grave. It was only decades later that a schoolteacher and her class raised enough money for a marker. Sometime in the 1930s, some 80 years later, an anonymous person or person started visiting his grave on the anniversary of his birth.
From wikipedia: "...The shadowy figure, dressed in black with a wide-brimmed hat and white scarf, would pour himself a glass of cognac and raise a toast to Poe's memory, then vanish into the night, leaving three roses in a distinctive arrangement and the unfinished bottle of cognac. Onlookers gathered annually in hopes of glimpsing the elusive Toaster, who did not seek publicity and was rarely seen or photographed...."
The tradition continues to this day. Poe, you and your art are missed.
So if you die and the only person that loves you is your cat? You still might be doing pretty well! Don't take it personally.

Locals is turning off their free accounts and I've decided that I'd rather go back to maintaining my own site than sign up for any more "free" services that end up changing the conditions of service later.
The new site is just like this one, only no "locals" in the name. It's https://danielbmarkham.com
Please give it a shot, and please let me know if you have any problems signing up. I think I have the configuration down but you guys will be the first 100 or so to sign up, so there'll probably be some snags.
