Friday!
Since Friday afternoon is a famous time for the chums to meet at the pub for drinks, I thought I would post this: the oldest picture we have of people drinking beer.
This is from 1844. That's right -- the guys in this picture have lives that could have easily crossed with folks like Jefferson or Nelson. It was shot in Edinburgh, Scotland (Where else?)
The mates are drinking what is known as an "Edinburgh Ale", which was rumored to be quite strong. They would have had to hold this post for almost a minute for the shot to work, so it looks like they're quite the photogenic chaps.
The photographer is the guy on the right.
It's amazing how modern this picture looks! They almost look like people you'd meet today at a pub. (One guy looks suspiciously like he may be on his cell phone.) The people are smiling! In most Victorian photographs, the people were extremely somber. This is because they were trying to look like all the famous people they saw in paintings -- who were also very somber. Smiling too much was considered the domain of children and crazy people.
These guys look to just be enjoying the scenery -- something that has probably not changed for thousands of years.
