There are many easy ways you can recognize a great work of art. It emotionally impacts you over time. It's done over and over again in different genres. Subsequent art either badly tries to reproduce it or pays homage to the original ideas there.
There's great art and then there's _important_ art. John Stuart Mill's book, On Liberty, is important art. There is not a week that goes by that I don't think about his ideas and how more people should be aware of them. I've even threatened to build a large inflatable version of the book just so I can beat people over the head with it. If you want to talk about free speech, it starts with On Liberty.
A libertarian article put it like this: "On Liberty is not merely a political text explaining the intricacies of how the state ought to act. It is a love letter to the individual virtues of intellectual curiosity, tolerance, and open‐mindedness."
When I engage with people who don't know On Liberty, many times I feel as if I'm debating math with somebody who has never seen a number before. To me there are foundational concepts at work. To them it's all just a word game to win an argument.
It's a small book, maybe 100 pages or so, and Mill writes in an acceptable style. In addition, chapter one and two contain the heart of his argument, so if you're pressed for time you can bail out after chapter two, although I don't recommend it.
We all could use a love letter to intellectualism and the survival of our species. We need to either evolve or die, and Mills explains the only way in which we're ever going to evolve.
