41 years ago today, Iranian students stormed the gates at the American Embassy in Iran, kicking off the Iranian Hostage Crisis.|
The students took hostages and kept them for 444 days. The event dominated the U.S. news cycles, overshadowed President Jimmy Carter's efforts at reelection, and was the direct cause of eight servicemen killed and four injured during operation Eagle Claw when helicopters crashed in the Iranian desert at Desert One.
This was the event that dominated 1979 and 1980. Every night the TV newscasters would do a count-up of how many days the hostages had been held. The pressure to do something was immense.
There's far too many movies, books, and documentaries on this subject to mention here. But it's also within the memory of many people who are sill alive. If you know somebody that lived through it, ask them what it was like.
