I don't like recommending war movies. It's far, far too easy to drift over the line from praising the movie to praising war in general, and war is a horrible and terrible thing.
Col. Moore, of "We Were Young, and We Were Soldiers" fame, said we should hate the war, but love the warrior. I think he got it spot on. There are time and places that should be remembered, people we should cherish.
When covering WWII, most every book and movie is about the war in Europe. Just about every piece of that has been picked over and made into some sort of documentary or drama. There are a few good works talking about the war in the Pacific, but not many.
HBO, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks got together to produce probably the best documentary of the American war in the Pacific Ocean that I've seen. It's as good as, or better, than "Band of Brothers"
Like Band, it's based on eyewitness accounts, this time the diaries of several marines who lived through the island-hopping campaign. HBO put it together as a 10-part miniseries. It's available on streaming, as well as Blu-ray and DVD. Highly recommended.
