Fifty-Five years ago today, 18 November 1965, the U.S. Seventh Calvary, First Batallion completed pulling out of the La Drang Valley in Vietnam. It was the first time large-scale U.S. armed forces faced-off against large-scale forces from North Vietnam. It would determine the future of the war.
It was an overwhelming victory for the U.S., but the North Vietnamese also considered it a success.
Many hundreds of men from both sides died in those few days.
There's a book about this. It is written by the commander of the U.S. forces alongside a reporter who was present. It is excellent. There was also a Hollywooc movie which is also excellent. This week might be a good time to consume either of those.
We remember.
