The internet of things (IoT) is notorious for being insecure, difficult-to-use, and quirky.
Microsoft has taken a step towards making IoT more secure with its Pluton hardware standard. Pluton bakes keys into the silicon, has a more cryptographically-secure random number generator, and other specialized cryptographic tools baked into the metal.
That's a nice move by Microsoft, but it doesn't amount to much if the other chip vendors don't support it, so it was pretty big news this week when all of the major chipset vendors announced support for Pluton.
The end goal, at least for Microsoft, is something called Azure Sphere. The idea is to lock down hardware from the unit to the cloud with no attack surfaces to exploit. It's unknown how much buy-in they'll get from their next steps, but it's good to see hardware and IoT getting sorted out.
