100 years ago today allied forces kicked off the Battle of Somme.
WWI was war on a scale that nobody had ever seen before. Fighting occurred all over the planet. The English initially went to war with 600,000 troops. During the battle of Waterloo, Wellington only had a tenth of those numbers.
The Battle Of Somme ran on for months without much of a result. The easy-to-remember stats are 5 months, 15 miles -- and a million dead. Here we see the British troops rising from their trenches to advance. Before the day was over, the Brits would have 60,000 casualties, 20,000 of which were dead.
It was the industrialization of warfare, men ground up by machine guns and artillery on a mass scale. It was no wonder that by the time the war was finished, no sane people in Europe or the states would want any part of any military action. And this is what led to the rise of Hitler. Because of the many ties between the two wars, many historians toady think there was really only one world war, with a 30-year or so intermission.
