On this day in 1962, the Algerian people finally had a chance to vote for their own independence.
The French had colonized Algeria for over a century, and by 1955 things finally reached the point of open warfare. The French and The Resistance both committed atrocities during the seven-year conflict. It finally reach the point where the de Gaulle (the President of France) was looking for a way out, and having the people vote for their own future was a (somewhat feeble) way of saving face.
Turnout was immense. In essence everybody voted and everybody voted to get the hell out of France. The French kept some options on using a few military bases, but after a few years they abandoned even them.
There is no historical or moral lesson to the colonization of Algeria and the resulting Civil War. To this day there are a lot of Algerians in France and a lot of French-speaking folks in Algeria. I would argue that this is a good thing for both cultures [Long discussion here about assimilation]. There were some great works of art that happened as a result. For instance, Camus' The Plague as well as The Stranger are set in Algeria. The war movie "The Battle For Algiers" is considered by many to be the best war film ever made.
But the end was a horrible, horrible thing. Both sides did things nobody should ever do. Although it was great that the Algerian people gained their independence, it was a fight for freedom nobody was proud of and it was an ugly way to get it. We should all be happy it is over.

Locals is turning off their free accounts and I've decided that I'd rather go back to maintaining my own site than sign up for any more "free" services that end up changing the conditions of service later.
The new site is just like this one, only no "locals" in the name. It's https://danielbmarkham.com
Please give it a shot, and please let me know if you have any problems signing up. I think I have the configuration down but you guys will be the first 100 or so to sign up, so there'll probably be some snags.
