Nerd Roundup Fridays: Pilot Licenses and Clean Code

Looking to learn how to fly? Check out Pakistan, where 1-in-3 pilots have fake licenses, according to the Transportation Minister.

We suffer with certification mills quite a bit in tech. Resumes will show up with all sorts of certifications and listing experience in cutting-edge tech. When the actual candidate is interviewed, too many times it's obvious they're not qualified for the job and cannot have the experience they say they do. It's even not unusual to have one person do the phone interview and a second person show up for the work. It's not good to see the same pattern happening in aviation. Let's hope they fix it before it spirals further out of control.

Is it time to stop recommending Clean Code to developers? One author thinks so. Starting out with the rambling "What is good? We may never know" platitude, the author meanders on from there, cherry-picking various parts of the Clean Code book to disagree with.

This is yet another instance in the infinite series of articles on the internet which should be titled "I don't understand X, so I'm going to tell you how bad it is" X can be dozens of things, it seems. If you pick a more popular X, who knows? You might be picked up and have your link shared around.

Some of this essay is good content. The problem is that the author, probably without realizing, is using mixed-metaphors for what makes a good process of developing code, cherry-picking various paradigms and then sticking them all together.

All books have problems. As professionals, it's our job to give up the dogmatism and "mine" various publications for things we can reuse. We look the worst when we make broad statements like this. [Links in comments]

Hey @bdkoepke , @dmrq70 , @fforfun , @MikeDwyer , @stevenMsmith , @AgileJazz , @XxWolfBanexX , @HappyDawn , @katamen , @SmileSyndicate , @DanielBMarkham

I've moved!

Locals is turning off their free accounts and I've decided that I'd rather go back to maintaining my own site than sign up for any more "free" services that end up changing the conditions of service later.

The new site is just like this one, only no "locals" in the name. It's https://danielbmarkham.com

Please give it a shot, and please let me know if you have any problems signing up. I think I have the configuration down but you guys will be the first 100 or so to sign up, so there'll probably be some snags.
