Cinema Saturdays: The Disaster Artist
If you're a fan of "Movies so bad they're actually good", then you might have heard of "The Room". It's a 2003 romantic drama (?) widely considered one of the worst movies ever made. A few years' back, one of the leads wrote a book about it, and James Franco decided to take the book and turn it into a movie.
So this is a movie about "How did this junk ever get made?"
I haven't seen The Room, so I can't say if I'd like it or not. Romantic/Drama movies are tough to do realistically for new filmmakers, and the producer/writer/director/star of The Room, Tommy Wiseau, was completely new and inept at all of that. The Room got made, basically, because some random guy who couldn't act decided he was going to make his own movie, because why not?
The Disaster Artist follows Wiseau and one of the actors from The Room as they meet and become friends. Who is this Wiseau dude? We never really know. He has an awful speech impediment, but when asked, he just says he's from Louisiana. How did he come up with the millions to make and promote this picture? We never really know. He doesn't seem to work yet has access to tons of money. Is Wiseau gay and looking to pick up this actor or form a relationship? Here the film is also deliberately vague, although generally coming down on the "no" side of that question. It's murky.
The Disaster Artist opens with a bunch of famous actors talking about how bad The Room was, and how much they would have loved to been on the set while it was shot. That was nicely-done by Franco, otherwise I probably wouldn't have stuck around for the end.
Franco won an award for it, and I liked it well enough. Maybe it gets a 75 on a scale of 1-to-100, more if you love films and The Room, less if you don't care about either. RT gives it around a 90%, but that's probably due a lot to most critics being movie fans. I think having a preexisting relationship to The Room makes a huge difference. As I understand it, it's so bad it's the new Rocky Horror Picture Show. YMMV.

The new site is just like this one, only no "locals" in the name. It's https://danielbmarkham.com
Please give it a shot, and please let me know if you have any problems signing up. I think I have the configuration down but you guys will be the first 100 or so to sign up, so there'll probably be some snags.
