Wandering Wednesdays: Lexicon Valley (podcast)
Do you like language? I'm not crazy about spending a lot of time learning a new language but I'm endlessly fascinated with the way new languages are created and old ones disappear.
John McWhorter is too. He's been studying this for many decades. I love hearing about how idioms and odd phrases happen, both in English and other languages. Are African-Americans creating a new pronoun? Did the original settlers of Appalachia speak with an English/Scottish/Irish accent? What are some of the most complex languages on the planet, and how did they get that way?
Every week is cool new subjects like that. John's also a show tunes fan, so he freely mixes in classic Broadway show tunes and other older masterpieces along with the chat. One of my favorite podcasts ever. I always look forward to the new installment.
