Wandering Wednesdays: The SHWEP Podcast
Why do people believe really odd things? Not religions, although many find various religions odd, but things that are almost religious?
In the Middle Ages, alchemists thought they could turn lead into gold. Early practitioners of the Jewish religion came up with an entire pantheon of angels, which the early Christians copied. The gnostics believed that if you knew the secret name of God you could become immortal. Various practitioners of magic thought that certain items and words could change the world around them. Pythagoras solved the problem of finding the hypotenuse of a triangle. Then he want on to create a very complex religion with dozens of rules based on his solution.
None of these became major belief systems. Some stuck around, attaching themselves to major religions for a while. Most, however, flamed up and then died out just as quickly.
Esotericism is the continual belief that keeps popping up in history of an enchanted world, that there's more than what we can see. As mankind developed math, mainstream religions, and writing, time-and-time again the mysterious and odd snuck into the picture.
In the Secret History of Western Empiricism Podcast (SHWEP), we learn various stories about how this happened, many times from writings of the people themselves, sometimes through interviews with scholars.
This podcast is not for everybody, but at times it is very interesting nonetheless. Not the kind of thing every other podcast is talking about.

I've moved!
Locals is turning off their free accounts and I've decided that I'd rather go back to maintaining my own site than sign up for any more "free" services that end up changing the conditions of service later.
The new site is just like this one, only no "locals" in the name. It's https://danielbmarkham.com
Please give it a shot, and please let me know if you have any problems signing up. I think I have the configuration down but you guys will be the first 100 or so to sign up, so there'll probably be some snags.
