Crypto Circus: Crypto Currency Losses
All things crypto continues to be more and more technical, with more and more money involved. This means it's the "wild west" in the industry, with each quarter bringing new bizarre stories.
As an overview, here are the estimated losses per year for crypto currency. (Note that these numbers are probably just wild guesses)
2017 - ~$400 Million
2018 - $1.7 Billion
2019 - $4.8 Billion
2020 - $1.4 Billion (first five months)
Year-to-year, outright thefts continue to go down while insider fraud and exit scams are shooting through the roof. Some highlights:
PlusToken scammers may have stolen $2B+
WireCard is missing $2.1B. Reporters and others who tried to investigate were harassed by the media and government
Disturbing trend of people who have large amounts of CC being kidnapped and asked to give up their passwords or be killed. (I will not identify these crimes further)
My guess is that actual losses are much higher. It's in the best interests of many folks to limit press coverage on these things as much as possible.

I've moved!
Locals is turning off their free accounts and I've decided that I'd rather go back to maintaining my own site than sign up for any more "free" services that end up changing the conditions of service later.
The new site is just like this one, only no "locals" in the name. It's https://danielbmarkham.com
Please give it a shot, and please let me know if you have any problems signing up. I think I have the configuration down but you guys will be the first 100 or so to sign up, so there'll probably be some snags.
