Cinema Saturdays: Adaptation
Adaptation is one of my most favorite movies ever, and that's something since I love all sorts of movie.
The writer, Charlie Kaufman, also wrote "Being John Malkovich", "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", and "Synecdoche, New York". If you're familiar with any of these works you know not to expect the normal fare from Kaufman, and in Adaptation, he delivers a meta-film worthy of the ages.
What's a meta-film?
Kaufman was asked to do a screenplay treatment of a well-known book about orchids. The problem is that while orchids are beautiful and delicate, they aren't very exciting. He drove himself almost crazy trying to figure out how to do it. He was running months late.
So he decides to add himself to the movie. Now the movie begins with him, Charlie Kaufman, getting an assignment to write a screenplay about orchids. The rest of the movie is about all of the drama associated with writing the movie itself. It's an endless hall of mirrors.
I've watched it half-a-dozen times, and I could easily watch it a few more. There's an evil twin (of course!), a temptation with dumbing it down, and even a lecture by an expert who's supposed to tell you how to be a better writer.
Movies are supposed to provide self-reflection. This is about as self-reflecting as they come. Highly recommended.
