Cinema Saturdays: The Running Man (Original)
Can Stephen King predict the future? In The Running Man, he envisions a world dominated by entertainment. Everything is geared towards pleasing the crowds. He missed the internet, but the rest of it is eerily spot-on.
Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a soldier/policeman falsely accused of a crime. In this future, some lucky people who are accused of a crime can, instead of being killed, appear on a TV game show where the prizes they could win are their own lives.
There are a few works of fiction that have oddly predicted some of modern life: 1984, Brave New World, perhaps Gattica. To see a movie come so close, and from as far back as 1987, is noteworthy. They get bonus points for making the game show look surprisingly real. They even brought in Richard Dawkins, the real-live host of Family Feud at the time, to play the role of MC.
This movie doesn't have the quality to watch over and over again, like Adaptation, but if you haven't seen it in a while, give it a look. It's a fun popcorn and action flick, and the sci-fi is pretty good. The last time I watched it I was busy doing other things, but several times during the movie I found myself catching key phrases "Get me the president's agent" and wondering how the hell some horror writer from 50 years ago managed to understand where much of society was headed. If you haven't seen it, you're in for a treat.

Locals is turning off their free accounts and I've decided that I'd rather go back to maintaining my own site than sign up for any more "free" services that end up changing the conditions of service later.
The new site is just like this one, only no "locals" in the name. It's https://danielbmarkham.com
Please give it a shot, and please let me know if you have any problems signing up. I think I have the configuration down but you guys will be the first 100 or so to sign up, so there'll probably be some snags.
