Startup Sundays: Back-of-napkin startup numerical modeling.
If you have a startup, you should stay away from spreadsheets, at least until you actually have a system that's making money. That's because it's far too easy to create these vast numerical castles in the sky that nobody will ever live in. But you will spend your time there, setting and tweaking little numbers, pretending that by changing the numbers you're actually changing the business.
So I hate overly MBA startup advice.
Having said that, I found Aman Jain's recent blog, "How to validate your startup idea quickly" a bit interesting. He walks us through a very rough, back-of-napkin modeling session he migh contemplate once he has some sort of random startup idea. But of course, this is not validation; this is simply coming to terms with the overall general limitations that are going to be put on your business by the marketplace should you have a hit. In many cases, it's possible to make money without making a living. It'd be good to know that ahead of time.
Just like the Drake Equation only proves that multiplying numbers together give you bigger numbers, startup models can only show you what _might_ happen one day. But it's not a complete waste of time to think about the general models, even if the numbers and results are far off base.

I've moved!
Locals is turning off their free accounts and I've decided that I'd rather go back to maintaining my own site than sign up for any more "free" services that end up changing the conditions of service later.
The new site is just like this one, only no "locals" in the name. It's https://danielbmarkham.com
Please give it a shot, and please let me know if you have any problems signing up. I think I have the configuration down but you guys will be the first 100 or so to sign up, so there'll probably be some snags.
